Nimbaya! The Women's Drum & Dance Company of Guinea gave
its NY premiere performance at Symphony Space as a World Music Institute
presentation. These remarkable ladies play the Djembe drum which has
been taboo for women to touch this drum. These ladies not only
drummed the Djembe drum but also brought an important message about
female genital mutilation. It is time this horrible practice was abolished.
There was an insert in the program from Secretary of Stae Hillary Rodham
Clinton advocating zero tolerance for FGM. It was a show that entertained as
well as educated the audience:
