Dancing Calgon: Embodied Research through Motif Notation

Submitted by Teresa Heiland -- July 30, 2025

In an embodiment study led by Dance Professor Teresa Heiland, her students Mandi Taylor, Marlene Jensen, and Stephanie Morikawa at Loyola Marymount University in CA explored how Motif Notation supports the process of learning dance from video. Through notating, revising, and performing, the dancers discovered how score writing deepens both intellectual understanding and physical embodiment. Their experiences highlight how Motif Notation can enhance cognitive, emotional, and kinesthetic learning—positioning the dancer as a researcher actively engaged in meaning-making and embodied inquiry.
